Recycling, Conservation and Being Green at this KOA
Since we have limited capacity in this county to handle recycling, we are only able to recycle aluminum cans. We ask you to take the time to
separate them from your trash and place them in the blue recycle containers next to the trash cans. When we have to make a trip into Phoenix to
the Costco Business Center we bring the entire load with us in our one ton diesel truck and make a short side trip to a recycler that pays us top
dollar for our clean cans and does not require us to crush them. We take the cash for the cans and purchase bio-diesel fuel for the truck and
our tractor.
Over the Winter we developed a leak in our natural gas line that feeds the park. We abandoned the 40 year old line and replaced it with a more
modern plastic pipe and replumbed the main building more efficiently. Over the past two months we have logged a significant decrease in the
amount of natural gas compared to the previous year.
We have been efficient in reducing the energy consumption in our pool and hot tub five years before it was a requirement for KOA Corporate
Office. The use of solar blankets to hold heat in the pool, a special blanket for the hot tub to reduce evaporation, and a solar heater on the roof
of the main building to extend the swimming season for our guests. This commercial grade unit only works when the sun is shining and the air
temperature is 75 degrees, when that criteria is met it pumps 90 degree water into the pool and shuts off when the temperature of the pool
becomes excessive.
Weed control is a hassle for any home owner, but when you have five acres of RV spaces to maintain it can become a nightmare. We own a push
lawn mower but have not used it in five years because it is not practical for our situation. We have scaled back to using a commercial four stroke
weed eater when there are no RV's in the general vacinity. We opnly get overwhelmed during March and April after some much neede rain falls
ant three week later we get weeds. But during the rest of the year we rely on Vision, Patch, Koko and Billy to keep the weeds down and the
trees trimmed. We walk our goats, yes goats twice daily through the park to do a general clean up and fertilizing of the trees. These goats are
very friendly and adore children. If you are moving on after staying with us and have fruits and vegetable that you are going to dispose of, drop
them off at the office before you leave and they will be an added treat for these gentle animals. But be warned, never show Billy a bag of Doritos!
Now, we also use a weed killer in the park, but it is home made, works as well or better than round up and is far more envioronmentally friendly to
children and pets, The Main ingredients are Distilled Vinegar and Salt.

ATV/Quad/Jeep Trail Update
If you are a resident of Arizona as of January 1st, 2009 you must have an OHV (Off Highway Vehicle) decal on your Jeep/ATV to travel on the
State Trust or BLM. They are available online @ http://servicearizona.com.
Now, if you are visiting Arizona from out of state for less than 30 days you do not need an OHV decal for your license plate. You do need to have
proof of out of state registration.
We have access to 70,000 acres of wilderness at our back door. Here is a link to get the lay of the land. We remind you that these trails are very
rugged and accidents can happen. So we suggest you use caution while you are out there.

Just so you know ... We have an Owl!
We noticed him back in September hanging around
fairly consistently. Almost every night it flies in and
perches in various spots around the main building. It is a
Great Horned Owl and stands about 24 inches tall and
has a wingspan of about 6 feet. It departs before
sunrise. The picture is a little grainy because it was a
timed, hand held exposure, and I used the moon to back
light the profile.
